As part of his poverty-reducing strategies to improve the living condition of his people, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Adentan, Hon Mohammed Adamu Ramadan has rolled out a free skills training program for women within the Constituency in a bid to equip them with hands-on skills to start their own businesses.

Hon. Mohammed Adamu Ramadan (Member of Parliament for the Adentan Constituency)
The program sought to build the capacity and skills of the women for employment and private enterprise in the Ice-Cream making,  soap and body crème making, doughnuts, pie, and shortbread which takes just a week to become skillful in the sector.

Interested women only need to register with the Organiser of the Women’s Wing of NDC within the Constituency free of charge and a training section is organized for them.

Madam Georgina Anim, Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) told EXPRESSNEWSGHANA, the program is meant to equip the women in the Constituency with job creation skills for self-reliance.

She said in the run-up to the 2020 general elections, the MP made a promise to prioritise the needs of the women in the constituency when he wins and the program was organized in fulfillment of the campaign promise to the women in the Constituency.

According to Madam Anim, the major challenge in the constituency is providing employment to the women and that the introduction of the skill training free of charge would help lessen the plight and bring in some relieves, stressing that, “the only requirement is to get register and then a date and time is fixed for the trainers to come and for within three days to a week one can start working”

“This program will help our women in the constituency a lot. With these skills, they can start their own businesses. It will reduce their overreliance on their husbands and relatives as well as visiting the MP to ask for one support or the other. So basically this training will help the women to become independent and masters on their own.”

“Those who are serious can start just after the training. The good thing is that you don’t need big money to start, so we encouraged them to start with the little amount they could and gradually it will expand,” Madam Anim said.

She explained that to make the program more beneficial and sustainable, the MP has again promised to support the women with seed capital to help enhance their trade.

So far, she said over 115 women who expressed interest in Ice-Cream making have turned up on Friday, August 27, 2021 training at the MP Constituency Office, while a new date has been programmed to train those interested in Soap and Bread baking, among others.

She added that the MP who is funding the program with his personal resources remained committed to the needs of the constituents and would also extend support to needy children in the constituency.

A Deputy Greater Accra Regional Women’s Oraganizer of NDC, Hajia Alimatu Issah said the training of the women was part of the party vision to equip and empower women in the country to be self-independent so they could be able to take good care of themselves and their families and as well contribute their quota to the nation.

According to her, more of such skills acquired training would be rolled out in all the 34 constituencies of the Greater Accra Region to provide skill training in bread baking, soap making, and among others and urged the beneficiaries to take the courses seriously to make them competitive in the job market.

She said the state of the country’s economy under President Akufo Addo is in a scramble and women must not select jobs but take advantage of available opportunities.

Ms.  Beauty Sekpey Ephenatha, CEO of Bmama Catering Services that provides the Skill Training said women are the most hard-working being when given the opportunity and that she would continue to impact more lives for a better society.

According to her, “it is a joy to seeing my fellow women having something to do for a living and I am prepared to go round the constituencies and impact knowledge on my fellow women. Women formed the majority of the population and not every woman would have the opportunity to work in the formal sector,” she said.

She took the women through the Ice-Cream making process and challenged them to develop personal interest to be able to start their own business after the training, emphasizing that they do not need a huge amount of money to start on their own  and where they don’t have the capacity at the individual level, they should collaborate or partners one another,

Ms. Beauty also urged the beneficiaries to be innovative and that “there are already people in the industry but it all depends on how your brand, how you package and how you relate to your customers,” stressing that there could not be a better rewarding job in any part of the world other than a self-employed job.

Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to EXPRESSNEWSGHANA, soon after the training expressed gratefulness to the MP and the collaboration team for the program as it has come to relieve them from abject poverty and economic hardship.

A beneficial who identified herself as Rejoice Agyeman, a Junior High School graduate said the program was helpful to her because it has equipped her with the needed skill and knowledge to start her own business.

Madam Gloria Nkebe, a Caterer who operates MAMAJ HomeChow Local Restaurant said the program has given her additional skills to expand her business with other services other than what she is already doing.

According to her, the knowledge she received from the training would also help her to impact same on those working with her.

“I am a student but this program is helpful to me. It has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to start something small while continue with my education. Selling Ice-Cream will fetch me some money to support myself and would also help minimizes dependency and unemployment among most women in the constituency,” another young lady identified herself as Samira Larry Musah said.

The population of Adentan Municipality, according to the 2010 Population and Housing Census, is 78,215 with Males constituting 50.3 percent and females representing 49.7 percent.
